Farm work at the Gasserhof

At the Gasserhof you can experience everyday farm life close at hand. You can watch us or even help out yourselves with the haymaking and you will be amazed at how well you sleep after a day’s physical work in the great outdoors.

Working on a farm

In some places we are able to use mechanical methods to cut the hay in our mountain meadows, in others it still has to be done by hand.

The grass has to be mowed, loosened, tedded and formed into swaths. Then it is loaded onto the trailer and transported to the feeding barn.

For the silage (partially fermented forage) the grass only needs to be left to wilt and is then gathered up, while the roughage (hay and aftermath) must be dried as well as it possibly can be in the field. This fodder then becomes the winter stock for our cows and calves.

Children in particular are very interested in this work and also enjoy helping out to the best of their abilities. Experiencing nature so close at hand leaves a lasting impression that will remain with your children for a long time after their holiday has come to an end and also enhances their general knowledge.

Work in the stable

The work continues in the stables. Early in the morning and on an evening we see to the animals’ needs. They are fed, mucked out, new straw is spread and the calves are given a drink. The cows are milked twice a day and the milk is collected by the Brixen dairy, where it is turned into delicious Mozzarella.

You are welcome to try the many different tasty treats that grow in our largevegetable garden, and that we also use in our cooking. Grandma Rosa takes care of the kitchen garden and the many flavoursome herbs that add a special something to every dish.
